ABOUT MY PROJECT

For the past 80 years, the economy of Brunei Darussalam has been dominated by the oil and gas industry. This has blessed its citizen in such ways that education and health care services in Brunei are free. Oil and staple foods such as rice, sugar and flour are heavily subsidized by the government. As a result, the people of Brunei enjoy a high quality of life. Despite the wealth received from oil and gas sector, about 4% percent of Brunei’s population still lives in poverty. This is the reason for me to come up with the project “Giving empowerment through agriculture”. Also, I was inspired by the Growing Garden in Colorado where the youths grow flowers and plants. For this project, I will collaborate with my university and relevant organizations to set up a garden in my university and this garden will be managed and maintained by underprivileged people and people who had criminal records such as rapist, drug abuse, thieves etc. These people are usually marginalized and labelled badly by the society and with the implementation of this project, this will expose the youths to agriculture and farming. Besides that, this can provide employment options for these unfortunate and underprivileged people in a hope that they will try to change their lives and also help their family to get out of the poverty cycle.
